Three hundred years after a forest burns,

it grows back fully.
Six days after the flames
black bears return for berries.
The restoration
of the world leaks
through a broken dam
and still lichen
survives on the held
breath of alpine rocks;
deep in the bushes
bear cubs feast,
teeth to tender blue
planets.

View all postsMaaike first appeared in CC's pages as a teenage writer from Ontario. She joined CC staff in 2021 and is now co-editor. Maaike is intrigued by the symbiotic relationship between hope-oriented journalism and the arts. Her undergraduate degree is in Intercultural Service and World Arts and she creates original watercolours and graphics for CC (proving that work can be fun). Maaike is currently pursuing a MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Her debut poetry collection, Pin Bones, will be published with Central Avenue Publishing in 2027.
