As a red-headed finch alights at the feeder.
Reflections on solitude.

I was sitting on the back deck in our
tiny backyard in shade
that protects me from the hot
morning sun I spend the rest
of the year longing for
& I realized that this
this solitude where all I hear
is the hum of our neighbours’
air conditioners & the high screech
of cicadas this solitude where long-stemmed
blooms bob at the slightest breeze open
to the investigations of hovering bees
& where my heart finds confirmation
of love radiating from every angle
this solitude itself
needs no explanation & just might
carry with it the explanation
for everything else
