In Matthew 6, Jesus told us to “look at the birds of the air” for lessons that birds can teach us about ourselves and God’s care for us. The word “ornitheology” was coined by theologian and avid birdwatcher John Stott, blending together ornithology (the study of birds) with theology (the study of God). It’s a unique way to better understand and engage with God’s word and God’s world.
Kevin Burrell, a pastor and birder, started the blog Ornitheology to share his reflections on birding and faith. “I’m convinced that, to remain sane and grounded on this planet, every one of us should make some sort of attentive effort towards some aspect of God’s creation,” he writes.
While his blog features a wide variety of topics (some leaning more towards the theology side and some more to the ornithology side), his recent book Considering Sparrows gives a “bird lens” on one particular book of the Bible.
Considering Sparrows goes through the book of Philippians using a wide variety of birds as examples to illustrate Biblical truths. Being a birdwatching expert isn’t a prerequisite to enjoying this book – in fact, if you know less about birds, this book will probably open you to even more wonder as you learn about birds from all over the world.
The book’s structure would make it wonderful for a Bible study group or personal devotions. Each chapter highlights different species and features a lovely illustration by Aedan Peterson. The blue-loving bowerbird, the shy treecreeper, the faithful albatross and, of course, the titular sparrow, all have lessons to teach us.
Whether you’re a birdwatcher, a theology nerd or someone looking for a new perspective on the Christian life, Considering Sparrows is uplifting and beautiful.
