Donald Trump is a hard guy to ignore, even for us Canadians. Lately it’s been even tougher because he’s been talking about us. And featuring in Donald Trump’s bloviations is almost never a good thing. In case you’ve missed it (lucky you!), he’s moved from threatening massive tariffs against Canada (unless we solve a largely…
Americans have done it again. They have brought Donald J. Trump back to the White House after a hotly contested election campaign filled with plot twists worthy of an Agatha Christie novel. Who could have foreseen that President Joe Biden would bow out midstream and yield to his vice president, Kamala Harris? Who would have…
In mid-November, James Dekker interviewed Ryan Struyk, Grand Rapids native and life-long member of the Christian Reformed Church. Calvin University named Struyk its 2021 Young Alumni Award winner. Struyk is Senior Producer for CNN’s Sunday “State of the Union.” Ryan and the show’s team won a 2023 Emmy Award for their coverage of the first…
Several writers for Christian Courier have contributed insightful and helpful pieces on the dangers of Christian nationalism in the United States (An Overview of a Worrying Development; An Examination of Recent Religious Thought; A Careful Critique). Since American Christian nationalism is so captivating, however, less attention is often given to Christian nationalism outside the United…

The contemporary Christian musician Andrew Peterson provocatively laments “the second coming of the Pharisees” when he witnesses Christians behaving contrary to their teacher (Come, Lord Jesus, 2000). I heard this song playing repeatedly in my mind as I read Katherine Stewart’s recent book, The Power Worshippers, on the rise and danger of Christian nationalism.
What explains the continuing strong support by evangelical Christians for a president whose actions are the antithesis of following Jesus? Dr. Kristin Kobes Du Mez answers that question in her new book, Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation.
By choosing not to fully help Puerto Rico, the U.S. government is putting lives in jeopardy not only on the island itself, but on the mainland as well – and potentially elsewhere. The President of the United States seems to believe that if a place is poor, or is home to people with brown skin, it is worthless. We are seeing proof right now that – in an integrated global economy – there is no such thing as “over there,” anymore.
What sort of president will Trump be? Predictions are always hazardous, of course, because even the most cautious and conservative can be overtaken by unforeseen developments. But we can more easily see the sort of president Trump is unlikely to be.
