As we head into the second decade of ubiquitous social networking, and mobile phone technology starts seeming more normal than novel, it is well worth regularly pausing to consider the impact these technologies have on our lives.
But there’s something bigger brewing on social media these days than celebrity cat-fights or Kim Kardashian’s rear-end. It’s empathy. All the cool kids are doing it. And it’s starting to change the way we see each other in a big way.
Let me be honest. Most days I’m feeling pretty proud if I manage to make the beds and wash the breakfast dishes before lunch time
Remember: videos go viral because they are unique and authentic. So what does that say about us Christians?
First, there was YouTube, where people could watch pre-recorded movies and video clips on their computers. Then came Facebook, making it possible to reach out to friends and family and share pictures, status updates and links. Then Twitter – a way to quickly share short texts and links with a wide audience.
Facebook takes up an hour of my day, sometimes more. When my sister was visiting over the holidays, I was away from my computer a lot. I missed my Facebook time! This sparked some internal debate.
Lately, I’ve been flirting with the idea of breaking up with Facebook. The conversation might go something like this: Hi, Facebook. I think it’s time we parted ways. Yes, for good. It’s not me, it’s you. Why? You’re making us all stupid.
