When I was in my early twenties, I visited the bookstore of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and purchased a copy of The Daily Office, edited by Herbert Lindemann and published by Concordia in 1965. A small volume, it nevertheless runs to nearly 700 pages and includes liturgies for morning and evening prayer organized…
Beautifully designed and illustrated, this journal is a lovely means to encourage and teach children to talk to God and grow in their relationship with him. Author Molly Hodgin explains, “The journal you hold in your hands isn’t just a notebook or diary. It’s not a school assignment you have to do for a grade….
It is possible to pray for peace. Our prayer life need not know our boundaries – no green lines, no dashes, no subtle demarcations. Our longings can transcend political ideologies, cut across our keen analyses. Earnestness, cast out of our public discourse, still has a place in the language of our hearts. We have the…
One year ago, I stood in front of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. I pressed my hands to the stone, closed my eyes, and asked: What is your story? Images flooded my mind: fire, smoke, incense, screams. I pulled my hand away. On either side of me women faced the wall, heads bowed, swaying slightly…
Years ago, Paul Simon sang, “These are the days of miracle and wonder.” But that song was filled with terrifying images: soldiers in the desert, a bomb in a baby carriage. That sounds more like mayhem and worry than miracle and wonder. Still, that wise secular theologian and prophet kept repeating “And don’t cry, baby, don’t cry.” Was he crazy? Was he right?
Creator of all / we are waiting for the sky to fall. / We look on in horror at children killed, / homes and schools bombed, / smoking rubble filling the streets.
For the past few months, fires have ravaged my home province of Alberta. For weeks, all we could smell was smoke. For weeks, we wondered if we would be the next ones to evacuate our homes. And now, the rain is finally falling. Heavy, heavy rain, days of rain, washing away the fire, the smoke,…
Illustrator Liita Forsyth’s winsome, delightful illustrations serve as a welcome mat for the three authors’ introductory comments to this encouraging, hopeful collection of prayers for children as they encounter everyday events: “These prayers are for ordinary days. For playing, for school, for when you have big thoughts or little ones. God meets you in each…
Cathy here. Please excuse the public praying. I should be holed up in some lowly corner, sinner that I am. I need help, Lord, even to pray. So timid, afraid to speak peace, or even to speak at all. I need belief to overcome my unbelief. I distrust your promises, I doubt your call, I…
Over the past two days there has been unfolding news of devastation in Syria and Turkey. Early in the morning of February 6, while most were at home sleeping, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the region – followed by a major aftershock 12 hours later. I write these words on the evening of February 7 and there…

“It is a miracle that we are still alive,” Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, told 80 members of the press. “So many good people around the world are united with us in their prayers and in their generosity.” On February 8, 2023, Aid to The Church In Need (ACN International) hosted…
