Bold interviews with distinguished guests
Review of the Lex Fridman Podcast.

Lex Fridman is an artificial intelligence researcher “at MIT and beyond.” His podcast is described as “conversations about science, technology, history, philosophy and the nature of intelligence, consciousness, love, and power.”
Whether you are interested in artificial intelligence or not, you will likely find the Lex Fridman Podcast very compelling. He has had increasingly distinguished guests, including Bishop Robert Barron, Jordan Peterson and University of Toronto cognitive scientist John Vervaeke.

If you watch the video version of an episode, you will see that Fridman is always wearing his signature black suit and tie. His conversations shine because of his interviewing ability. He does have prepared questions, but he’s sharp on the fly, adding in questions directly related to what is being discussed.
However, what really makes Fridman such a good interviewer is his bluntness. Not only is he courageous enough to ask straightforward questions, which cut right to the heart of ideas, but he is also not afraid of asking confrontational questions.
The best example of his bold style is probably his 2022 interview with Kanye West. But even in interviews where the stakes are less high, Fridman is a master of making his guests reinforce their ideas. He doesn’t intentionally cause conflict, yet he will make sure that each notion is fully justified; he will also provide responses to potential criticism from opponents.
Fridman’s style leads those he interviews to give their strongest insights. I cannot overstate the effectiveness of his simple questions. Not only does he get into the most abstract consequences of a concept, but even before doing so he ensures that the guest explains the fundamental basis behind it.
This interview tactic was illustrated in Fridman’s 2022 interview with Bishop Robert Barron. Rather than lead with a contemporary issue facing the Catholic Church, Fridman chose to start the interview by asking: “Who is God?” Even the subtle “who,” instead of “what,” shows how masterfully Fridman crafts his questions – in order to elicit the best possible responses. If you want a truly great interviewer, with big guests, the Lex Fridman Podcast is for you.
