I have always been struck with the odd grammatical construction of Jesus’ statement that “I am the way, the truth and the life.” How can one be the truth? We understand the concept of being truthful, that is, speaking the truth or being honest, but being truth is just an odd thing for someone to say, isn’t it?
In my last column I shared how love won out in my life and propelled me to the cross of Jesus, which changed the direction of my life.
The Gospel is in danger of being redefined. The message seems to be, “We are right, and you are wrong.” The proclamation becomes a debate, another argument in an already contentious society.
Within the church we are having plenty of conversations about the complexities of gender identity and that is truly amazing. Especially given that this topic was once a taboo conversation. As someone who has and continues to walk through gender identity issues, my heart has always desired that people within the church can talk freely. But as the conversations develop, I feel that there is a danger that we see God viewing gender and sexuality as grey issues.
