Artist Jennie Vegt tries her best not to come into a patient’s room with an agenda. Her first priority is to make patients feel seen and to get to know their creative interests. Her goal is simple: “Let’s bring arts experiences to the bedside.” Since 2021, Vegt has been an artist-in-residence through the Artists on…
I’ve been surprised by mending. I’ll start the story by saying that when I wrote my January column about mending, forgiveness and Louise Bourgeois’ spider sculptures, I did not expect it to be a personal prediction. I didn’t expect much of January at all. Despite the new year, January can drag on like an old…
Recently, I wandered into the Vancouver Art Gallery to see the work of Tamio Wakayama, a Japanese-Canadian photojournalist. He was born in 1941 in New Westminster, B.C., and died in 2018 in Vancouver. Shortly after his birth, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and Wakayama’s family was forcibly moved into an internment camp. According to the…

Dare we imagine new life /
rising from these streets of death?

“I could not, not see the image of a table set with tea in the midst of rubble. It had been in my mind for years,” explains Karen Tamminga-Paton, the Alberta artist whose art installation, Peacetalks, recently exhibited at Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre in British Columbia. Tamminga-Paton was beginning an artist’s residency in France with…
