We don’t know very much about Simon of Cyrene. That doesn’t diminish his significance. He’s mentioned in three of the gospels as the man who carried the cross for Jesus. The fact that he’s named in Scripture attests to the honour of his service to our Lord. Since details are sparse, I can’t help but…
Last November, Trump declared Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern, a designation reserved for nations where religious persecution happens. This gave the president power to impose sanctions on Nigerian officials. But Trump didn’t stop there. On social media, he threatened to stop aid and to “go into that now-disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out…
After the 1517 Reformation, the relationship between mainstream Protestant Reformers and Anabaptists was characterized by bitter hostility and systematic persecution. What began as theological disagreement escalated into violence that would define centuries of Christian division. At the conflict’s center lay a seemingly simple question: when should Christians be baptized? While reformers like Luther and Calvin…
These days Lydia has become very fond of what we nicknamed the “drum CD.” Its true title is “Orient-Occident 1200-1700.” The performers are musicians all the way from Afghanistan to Spain, who play traditional instruments such as the rebab (fiddle), tulak (flute), oud (lute) and daf (drum). Lydia likes the energy, the movement and the…
Lukewarm, that is the charge. I have heard this as a charge that the Reformed tradition lacked passion. More recently, it has been used to advocate for clarity: take a position, don’t stay in the messy middle. Christ’s letter to the church in Laodicea includes the passage, “I know your deeds, that you are neither…
This August, crowds will gather at Rugarama hill in Kabale, Uganda, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the East African Revival arriving in Kigezi. “Uganda is what it is to a large extent because of that East African Revival,” Manuel Muranga, professor of language studies at Kabale University, told me: the revival shaped the country’s…
Josué Reichow is a bright scholar from Brazil who is opening Dooyeweerd in new ways for a new culture. I first came across Reichow through his talk on a Christian response to Critical Theory, in which he offered a generous and clear-eyed way Christians could ally with the postmodern project of deconstruction and decolonization but…
For the March issue’s theme on Translation, CC’s Editor interviewed Dr. Albert M. Wolters, emeritus Professor of Religion at Redeemer University and a biblical scholar who translated one of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Here, Dr. Wolters tells the story of being invited to view the actual Copper Scroll in Jordan and what happened after he…
A city and tow’r, whose top may reach Heaven; And get themselves a name, lest far dispersedIn foreign lands their memory be lostUpon their tongues a various spirit to razeQuite out of their native language, and insteadTo sow a jangling noise of words unknown:Forthwith a hideous gabble rises loudAmong the builders; each to other callsNot understood,…
The history of Christianity over the last 2000 years has had a few pivotal moments. One key period was the 4th century, during the reign of Emperor Constantine. The events of Roger Haydon Mitchell’s novel, The Day of the Labyrinth, take place during this time. The book is classified as a historical novel. On the…
The Reformed Church in America (RCA) and the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRC) are close but different. The RCA offers more room for diversity on the issues of human sexuality, and churches can even celebrate same-sex marriages. Some CRC folks have asked whether they might fit better in the RCA, but they realise…
We were well into “the Christmas holiday season,” and I was becoming engulfed in the frivolous jingle-jingle bell muzak played on loudspeakers while buying potatoes and onions in No Frills. CBC Radio 2 can mix a medley that thoroughly hides any Jesus Christ in a bouquet of mistletoe and a hot toddy of warm cider….
