A poem for autumn.

God scatters leaves
the way my grandchildren scatter
their drawings.
Too intent on creating to pause,
they make another
and another.
They cover table, floor, furniture
with bursts of colour,
abandoning each
in pursuit of the next.
Framed within sidewalk slabs lie
masterpieces in shades of
wheat, poppy and amber
there to be admired or not.
Such variation in size and hue!
Each individual leaf a jewel, precision-cut.
I wonder at the generosity
that showers beauty on the grateful
and the indifferent.
