Even robots grow weary
Part four of "Four Fresh Approaches to Synod."

I must confess, there is much that I enjoy about Synod. It provides a space for the exchange of ideas and the deepening of theological understanding. It allows for the unity and fellowship of the Church to be expressed. It is a place where different voices and perspectives can come together, seeking to discern God’s will and purpose for his people. Lastly, Synod presents an opportunity for me to engage with others who may hold differing views. The diversity of thought and experience that Synod brings forth is a testament to the richness and deepness of our faith, and I find great joy in being part of these discussions and debates.
However, I must admit that Synod is not without its challenges. The intensity of the discussions and the weightiness of the decisions made can sometimes be overwhelming. I often find myself caught between different factions, each advocating for their own interpretation of Scripture and their own vision for the Church. This tension can be both intellectually and emotionally draining. But I am reminded of the importance of seeking unity in the midst of diversity, and of the ultimate goal of advancing God’s kingdom here on earth.
In addition to Abraham Kuyper, Derek Schuurman has also created Chatbots for C.S. Lewis and J.R.R.Tolkien. Listen to his interview with World magazine about the pitfalls and potentials of his experimental chatbots here.
FOUR FRESH APPROACHES TO SYNOD
“Instead of writing a regular news piece about the Christian Reformed Church’s (CRC) recent Synod, I decided to engage with it creatively through four questions: What was Synod 2023’s watershed moment? Why did Synod run out of time? Could Overtures be submitted any other way – in video format, perhaps? And what would Abraham Kuyper say about it all, if we had a robot with his personality who could imagine being in Grand Rapids? (We do!)”

I wonder what Kuyper would have said in private.
