About the painting: Bruce Herman’s art has been exhibited in most major cities in the USA and abroad in Italy, England, Israel, Japan, Hong Kong and the Vatican. Herman holds the endowed Lothlórien Distinguished Chair in Fine Arts at Gordon College in Massachusetts, and is Gallery Director and Art Collection manager there. You can find more of Herman’s art and writings in his book Through Your Eyes (2013, Eerdmans Books, Grand Rapids) and online at www.bruceherman.com.
‘QU4RTETS No.3 (Autumn)’ is part of a collaborative exhibition with painter Makoto Fujimura and Yale composer Christopher Theofanidis, all interacting with T. S. Eliot’s masterpiece, Four Quartets. All four images in the series use a person and a tree to represent different seasons of life: a child perched high in the branches, a serene sunbathing young woman, a middle-age adult turning towards the light (the cover image of our April 11, 2022 issue) and finally an aging man in the embrace of withered bark.
Beautiful.
