A secure and strong nation
A letter to Mark Carney.

Back in April, Christian Courier gave three university students a two-part assignment. First, to write an opinion piece sharing their view on the election (published online before we voted). Second, a letter to the new PM, whoever he might be, written after April 28. We hope you’ll appreciate hearing the hopes and fears of these younger voters. As you read their letters to Mark Carney, maybe you’ll even be spurred on to connect with a young person in your life and find out what they think about the issues facing our country today.
To The Right Honourable Mark Carney,
“Elbows up.” Don’t allow this cheesy catch phrase to define your leadership – back it up with your actions. As you begin your first real term as Prime Minister, I pray you stand up for our country.
Use your banking experience to strengthen the Canadian economy, so that we will not be as reliant on the U.S. Stand strong with our European allies, increase trade partnerships and stand up for democratic nations around the world.
Young Canadians have noticed the drastic division in the U.S., and Canada seems to be following suit. Please do your best to unite the nation, leading with grace, integrity and transparency. Scholars, including Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny, have theorized that when the public loses trust in political institutions, democracy falls. Do your best to restore faith in government to Canadians who may have lost trust during the later years of Justin Trudeau’s leadership.
Finally, protect Canada in any way you can. Work together with President Trump, but do not let him push us around. The Liberal Party’s victory shows the importance voters placed on Canada’s sovereignty. We are proud to be Canadian, and Canada elected the Prime Minister that they felt would best protect the country from the threats of the U.S. Do what is best for the citizens of Canada, regardless of the political implications.
It won’t be easy. The internet age has polarized politics to an extent that seems irreversible. But I still believe that transparent, honest and effective leadership will gain the respect and support of the majority of Canadians. From now until the time comes for another federal election, we are depending on you to build Canada forward into a secure and strong nation.
