Sometimes the issues of the day have a clear scriptural directive. Scripture tells us, for example, to care for God’s world, and thus we should do all we can to address human-induced climate change and its adverse effects. At other times, scripture provides no obvious guidance – how, for example, should we assess the benefits…
The news is filled with reports of wars and conflicts, in which modern weapons inflict widespread death and suffering. And those are just the conflicts that reach our feeds. We live in a time when small, local conflicts are increasing. Wars affect millions of civilians, both adults and children. Humans are, unfortunately, experts in the…
During the first week of April, four image-bearers hurtled toward the lesser light to swing around it before returning to Earth. The astronauts in Artemis II, including a Canadian, were an important step on humanity’s return to the Moon after about half a century. Future Artemis astronauts hope to land and ultimately to build a…
What a wonder our universe is! Take light, for example. We can see only a tiny band of the electromagnetic spectrum. At the shorter end are ultraviolet light, X-rays and gamma rays, while at the longer end are infrared light, microwaves, radar and radio. Our atmosphere absorbs many of these wavelengths, preventing them from reaching…
Dr. Darcy Visscher, associate professor of biology at The King’s University in Edmonton, has always loved animals; from farm creatures to large African mammals, Visscher is fascinated by animal behaviour and the role humans play in impacting it. Visscher analyzes the role of animal behaviour patterns in both rural and urban landscapes by building and…
The BioLogos Foundation is a Christian faith and science organization founded by Francis Collins, who later served as the head of the American National Institutes of Health (NIH), serving for 17 years under three presidents. For many years, BioLogos was led by Debora Haarsma, formerly of Calvin University. Recently, BioLogos released an open letter to…
On a recent spring course in Korea, I had the unique opportunity of visiting a variety of businesses and universities. A highlight of the trip was attending the 2025 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Expo in Seoul. I heard the same message over and over: AI is here to stay and is developing at a rate faster…
Psychologists have long been interested in attention. It is a phenomenon at the heart of consciousness and self-awareness. It is real for all of us, but at the same time it is not well understood. We all know what is meant by the word attention, but a simple scientific explanation is elusive. Attention can span…
As I write this at the end of February, science journals are full of the consequences of the Trump administration’s actions on science in the United States and elsewhere. With the pace of changes and the court cases launched, it is not clear what the situation will be when you read this, but whatever happens,…
Chemistry is much more than balancing equations and examining molecules – just ask Dr. Peter Mahaffy. Students in his classes at The King’s University don’t study isolated science reactions; they use a “systems thinking” approach to look for the intrinsic connections between scientific concepts, the earth, social systems and people. When I took Mahaffy’s Chemistry…
It is an exciting time to be a physicist. There are a lot of puzzles that need investigating about the cosmos God has put us in. We don’t know, for example, what dark matter and energy are, yet they make up the most significant portion of our world. Likewise, the two overarching theoretical frameworks in…
Daniel Dennett died on April 19 at age 82. There were obituaries in both Nature and Science for this prolific neuroscientist. His insights on consciousness, cognition and philosophy fill books that have been read by many. I have a few in my bookcase, and they are well worth reading. The fact that he received an…
