Despite

the surmisings of four-ace trumpians
and fulminations of white-knight dukes
the slavophilic putin clones
or a hundred thousand variants of the protocols of the elders . . .
   pitching hatred

the true north stands on guard
from Inuvik
where Muslim cabbies drive African dentists
to Gwichin appointments
and Adventist sledders maintain a precarious sabbath,
Catholics worship in an igloo church,
and Inuit drums pronounce peace to European visitors

to Iqaluit
where the uquiik-ings are paved
with Ethiop, Hindu, and ‘Merican musings
and Newfied knowledge,
while Northmart proffers pomegranate and peace
Columbian coffees
(colonial echoes notwithstanding)
and here the Anglicans have the iglu church

these gentle protectors
who espouse us over them
Japheth, Ham, and Shem
live in the muddle of lives lived

in a welter-skelter world of incomplete
but gently stirred unity –
inclusion in an excluding world –
a community of sorts
not a finished product
but a start
hesitant, but firmly
resolute from Tuk to Tuq,
alert to trends and accepting . . .

these stand guard –
strong, free,
pretty true
and definitely north.
