“In the West in general we tend to have a whole culture built around the idea that success looks really overt, really big; we have a hard time valuing small and ordinary things. We don’t like boring life. We like sensational life. The church can buy into that just as easily as the culture can.”

But the truth is, in today’s world, you need both technological and hands-on knowledge. The goal is not to go pre-digital. The goal is to find a healthy balance between digital and analog – a happy marriage of the two.

Working as a nurse in Canada today is challenging. “We have way too much to do,” Gaudaur says, since government-regulated budget cuts have replaced RNs with RPNs and increased the nurse/patient ratio. “Tasks and expectations” are impossibly high, yet “people who don’t know me need me to be kind.”
After their son’s suicide, Chris and Christy knew they wanted to make something good come out of this tragedy. They knew they wanted to speak out about the danger of depression and to challenge the stigma around mental illness. “If we kept it all hush-hush, then we’ve lost our son and nothing good comes of it and Satan wins. We’ve tried to make the best of a bad situation and bring glory to God. There’s an opportunity for grace and . . . awareness, talk and more openness.”
Disasters and their aftermath can be an opportunity for the local church to do what it does best: care for the vulnerable, get involved and seek out those in need.
Puns and parodies might get some laughs, but Christ’s humble, miraculous birth is already timeless and universal. It doesn’t need to be made more relevant or relatable.
