I know very little about hockey. (I recently saw an ad with Wayne Gretzky and didn't recognize him!)

Despite knowing none of the rules and few of the players, I do have hockey memories – like my Dad driving us through Montreal when I was 12 years old, the streets gridlocked with Canadiens fans waving fists and cheering. The air was electric. My family spent that winter in Quebec watching Hockey Night in Canada, a good memory.
|
Hockey gives Canada a name on the world stage as well as at home, but a nation is not made on sports alone. There is the nation-wide debate on oil and gas, fanned by the tariff war. There are Canadians weighing in on whether we should support Carney's pledge to raise defense spending. Today's writers remind us that all of these areas of life in Canada – military, resources and hockey – are integrated with our faith.

The Staal brothers’ road to the NHL started on Henry and Linda Staal’s rink near Thunder Bay, Ont. In their early years, high snowbanks framed the ice. As Eric, Marc, Jordan and Jared grew, so did the rink: real boards, official nets and good lights so the boys and friends could play during Northwest Ontario’s long nights. On July 2, the governments of Canada and Alberta officially advanced a proposal for a new West Coast oil pipeline, running from Bruderheim, Alta., to the Roberts Bank marine terminal in Delta, B.C., with a capacity exceeding one million barrels per day. It would largely follow the route of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, which transports oil at a rate of 890,000 barrels per day.

Pope Leo XIV has ignited debate among church leaders and peace activists by declaring ‘just war’ theory “outdated.” Rather than functioning as principles of restraint, ‘just war’ theory has become a tool for justification. “Today, more than ever …. the ‘just war’ theory, which has all too often been used to justify any kind of war, is now outdated,” the Pope wrote in his first papal encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, released in May.

One of our writers is working on an article about mixed-church marriages – that is a marriage where the spouses are members of different Christian denominations. This could mean that on any given Sunday you: Go to church together, but one of you identifies more strongly with a different denomination OR you attend services at two different churches, but go together OR you attend separate churches.

If you are in a mixed-church marriage, we would love to hear from you about what works and what's hard. We would also love to speak with pastors and other church leaders about their approach to these situations (words of advice, words of caution, and how you help couples navigate the unique challenges they may face).
