CC Editor tops 2017 Word Awards shortlist

Angela Reitsma Bick, Christian Courier’s (CC) Editor-in-chief, received the highest number of nominations on the 2017 Word Awards shortlist, which honours the best in Canadian Christian writing.

The Word Awards was established by the Word Guild, a community of Christian Canadian writers, editors, speakers and publishers. Winners will be announced at the Word Guild Awards Gala Friday, June 23. The Word Guild’s announcement stated that Reitsma Bick “leads the way with three nominations in several column and article categories.”

Reitsma Bick’s nominations for articles published in 2016 include long feature “The Stained-glass Ceiling,” personal experience “Editors Are Nothing Like Moms,” and profile/human interest “Everyday Patron Saints.”

Under the Columns – Series category, CC columnists Rudy Eikelboom (for “Artificial Intelligence II” and “Artificial Intelligence III”) and Sara Pot (“To Know and be Known” and “Grace, Grief and Stubborn Hope”) also received nominations. Derek Schuurman received a nomination in the single column category for “Transhumanism and the Incarnation.”

“That Christian Courier has received six nominations in the 2017 Word Awards testifies to the outstanding quality of the writing found in the paper,” said Hugh Cook, a fiction writer whose novel Heron River won a Word Guild award for best contemporary novel in 2012.

“Angela Reitsma Bick not only garnered three nominations for her own editorial writing, more so than any other writer, but the other nominations indicate the quality of the columnists and contributors Angela has managed to draw to Christian Courier,” he added.

“The breadth of subject matter is evidence that the paper is living out its mandate to provide excellent Christian journalism across a broad spectrum. Family life, science, religion, disabilities, technology, the arts – these are the subjects the nominated columns and articles cover.”

Christian singer-songwriters Carolyn Arends and Steve Bell are double nominees in poetry and column categories. Well-known newspaper columnists Michael Coren (Toronto Star) and Raymond J. De Souza (National Post) are also short-listed.

“In a year celebrating Canada’s 150th, when Canadians everywhere are celebrating our nation’s ongoing story, the impact that these writers are having can’t be underestimated,” said Thomas Froese, chairman of The Word Guild’s Board of Directors, in a press release.

“It’s a credit to each of the nominees, already, whether they win an award or not, to have their work brought forward for this sort of memorable evening,” said Froese.
More information about the gala and the full short list is available on the Word Guild’s website.
