Being a person
afflicted with an immoderate enthusiasm
and a bilious piety

one who fluctuates
between rosy cynicism
and jaundiced optimism

neither old enough to be resigned
nor young enough to be resilient

finding oneself trapped between
spurts of enthusiasm
and doldrums of doubt . . .

Could I achieve, please,
Simeon, or Anna,
or must I be at ease
with someone, somewhere —
a mentor of persuasion
less divine —
not a Solomon, a Jesus ben Sirach,
or a Saul of Tarsus,
but a background whisperer
speaking words of wisdom:
“Let it be”?

Nunc Dimittis

Lord,
now lettest thou thy servant
     depart in peace
     according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared
      before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles
and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

(from the Book of Common Prayer)
