Three Gifts

A poem.

Three Gifts

the golden globes
of tiny Lady’s Slippers dance
hidden in the grassy edge
where bush and lawn converge.

silky velvet Iris veined in plum
creased by the dog’s plump body
only for a moment
until the keeper of the flower garden
growled her own growl
and he
with bowed head stepped out
and away
with eyes that questioned
“I used to lie there.”

three guarded Sweet Pea plants emerge
from their compact orbs in the dark earth
pale fragile green
alive if cared for
